LATHE GEARBOX ASSEMBLY COMPLETE- HIGH LOW GEAR DRIVE SYSTEM WITH SHIFTER
This is an assembly for your DIY lathe project. Here you have a complete assembly to install in or design your lathe head around. This will give you a gear drive out put from the spindle to your lead screw with a HIGH-NEUTRAL-LOW drive and a detent shifter. There is a special gear A to fit on to your spindle shaft which drives gear B which has a cluster of gears that match gear D which slides on shaft E to select either high-neutral or low speed. Shaft E has a final output gear on the end to mate up with your threading or power feed gear train. The output ratio from spindle to gear B is 2-1 and then 1-1 in the high range and 2-1 in the low range, so if your spindle is turning at 1000 rpm, in high range your output gear turns 500 rpm and in low range it turns 250 rpm. The final output gear has 18 teeth, so you can calculate from there what gears you need to get the feed rates you desire. Spindle gear A is 34 teeth and has a 36 MM ID with a 6 MM key. 2 Circlips are included in the kit so you can secure the gear on your spindle in the correct location. Gear B rotates freely on shaft C which is designed to fit into your housing with a special expanding end which secures it in the correct location to align the drive gear with your spindle gear. Gear D, the shifter gear, rides on shaft E which turns in flanged bushings which locate it in the housing and it also has bronze machinable bushings to adjust your alignment. Gear D slides along shaft E on a 6 MM key. The shifting of gear D is done by the shifter assembly which has a shift lever with a roller that rides in the space between the high and low gears and allows smooth shifting with the gears turning. The lever is attached to a shifter handle which has 3 position ball detents for a nice snap in secure location. The detent is spring loaded and adjustable for your preferred tension. ( NOTE: the plate comes blank so once your assembly is all done, you engage your position and then drill through the detent hole to create a dimple in the plate for the ball). The shifter shaft has an o-ring seal to prevent leakage of oil from your gearbox.
This kit is a huge time and money saver if you are building your own lathe project- it would takes months and many hundreds of dollars to design and source all these components.
